Gash Land: Update May 2015

Progress update on the development of my cuntry Gash Land, its successes/failures so far and what will happen next

Gash Land is the cuntry I founded in January 2015 as a response to negative reactions to my personal life and choices. Gash Land exists in the collective imagination of myself – Glorious Leader Kayleigh O’Keefe – and my citizens, with some cross-over into reality.

Locating Gash Land

The thing that has been most interesting about this project so far is the cross-over between art and life. Where is Gash Land? How does it exist? For me, its nature seems to be quite dynamic.

GLFO40At times I have felt as though Gash Land is a direct manifestation of my psyche, framed within the events of my life. At other times I have felt like Gash Land is being driven by its contributors. Sometimes I have felt like in my day-to-day life I am living by the rules of Gash Land, and taking on my Glorious Leader ‘character’ in a natural way.

What I am most interested in, though, are the times that I have actively chosen to blur the lines, especially in my personal life. I have taken people on dates to Gash Land and I have maintained sexual and romantic relationships by the rules and principles of my cuntry, and in the role of Glorious Leader. When I have felt down I have demanded attention and adoration from my minions, and at times I have taken out my frustrations on them by being harsh and unforgiving.

Gash Land at Fannying On, March 2015

On 6th – 8th March 2015 I brought Gash Land to life at Fannying On, a weekend art show of works in progress by female artists. I used this space to develop some ideas for the performances and concepts I was exploring in these beginning stages of the project. I will be doing this again at the next Fannying On event 10th-12th July 2015.

Bringing Gash Land into reality like this was a good way to meet some of my citizens as well as recruit new ones. Over the weekend 30 people signed up, and the people that came along really engaged. Citizens brought me offerings of wine, chocolate, gin, sandwiches, snacks and a plunger.

The Citizens of Gash Land

As Gash Land’s population approaches 100 I am impressed with the level of engagement and enthusiasm my minions have for the project. They have showered me with gifts, taken fan photos, given me eternal adoration and none of them have been mean to me or broken any major rules.

I mainly keep in touch with my citizens using a private Facebook group but also use other social media, email and the Gash Land website to make sure everyone is updated and involved.

Gash Land Broadcasts

I have been communicating ideas and developing the presence of Gash Land by the regular online distribution of ‘Gash Land Broadcasts’. These have functioned to update citizens on the Glorious Leader’s personal life, to address topical issues like the banning of certain acts in UK porn and to give information about procedures and values in Gash Land.

What Next for Gash Land?

I am still trying to recruit as many citizens as possible, and continue to develop performances and make films and so on. I am still in an experimental phase with this project and am enjoying seeing the way it goes. I am very interested in the cross-over between life and art, and how this intersection works.

On 30th May I will be performing the Psychedelic Menstrual Hut experience at Deep Trash Italia #5 – Religious Bondage. Gash Land will be live at the second Fannying On show on 10th-12th July 2015 at Fox Court.

Official Gash Land Website

Gash Land Website is full of information about Gash Land and is where people can apply to be citizens. It is a useful place to keep everything together as not all citizens are reachable by social media platforms and so on.
